Unity Tutorial 04

Hello and welcome back to another unity tutorial!  It is finally reading week!! I am still working a lot so it wasn't necessarily a break but it felt nice for my eyes and brain to get somewhat of a break for a while!  I have completed two more sections of the unity tutorials! I found the tutorials easy to follow but sometimes hard. The tutorials are very helpful to me in the aspect of my game. I found that the tutorial for Automatic spawn wouldn't be very useful to my game but it gave me good knowledge and was also very fun to learn! It was also very useful to learn how to collide animals with objects or people. I fell like this part of the tutorial could help me in my game and be vital to know. I would use this part of the tutorial when I want to create the obstacle course of my game when the dogs collide with an object in the obstacle course.  The challenge 'tutorial' was quite difficult. Even using the hint was hard. The hits did help me to an extent but I had to us

Unity Tutorial 03

Hello!! In today's blog,  I will be sharing what I learned from Unity Tutorial 03. In this tutorial we got to add animals to our game, this was very exciting because I am basing my own game on dogs so it was really helpful to see my choice of dogs and how to add them to the prototype! I also learned how to stop the player and animals to not fall off the edge of the terrain and this will also help me in my future game. I also really need to learn how to somehow split the screen with the tutorial and my unity tab. That would be a lot easier than having to move the windows! I will be sure to learn how to do that for the next time! I have to admit, I found some of the tutorials hard because sometimes I can't get them to work. My code could be slightly off and it would hold up the production of the whole prototype. I will get there eventually! I never really look forward to doing the unity tutorials because the time length of them seem so daunting but I really enjoyed these tutorial

Games MDA

Hello!  In today's blog post, I will be expressing my thoughts and sharing notes about MDA and partially DDE. I've read two articles and watched one video mostly about MDA and some DDE. I read  MDA: A Formal Approach to Game Design and Game Research  by Robin Hunicke, Marc LeBlanc, Robert Zubek and  Design, Dynamics, Experience (DDE)  by Wolfgang walk, Mark Barrett and Daniel Görlich. I also watched  Explaining the MDA Design Framework | Video Game Design  by a YouTube Chanel called 'The Last Bacon'. All three sources were amazing and described the MDA and DDE framework very well.  Today, I have learned that design methodology supports a designer by helping them determine the end result of their game. It will strengthen the iterative processes of developers, scholars and researchers. MDA stands for Mechanics, Dynamics and Aesthetics which are all game elements. The MDA framework is supposed to represent the lens or view of the game from both the developer and players

Feedback Strategies

Hello!  Today I will be talking about different feedback strategies. Last week I spoke about my thoughts on feedback in general but today I will be going into more dept and talk about how I can give feedback to someone else as well as my general thoughts. I have read two articles about feedback:  Try Feedforward Instead of Feedback  by  Marshall Goldsmith and  How to Give Feedback Without Sounding Like a Jerk  by Adam Grant.  The first article I read was  Try feedforward instead of feedback . I found this article very interesting and the title immediately caught my eye. In the article, Goldsmith talks about both the positive and negative sides of feedback. Goldsmith says that feedback can benefit a person but also can focus on the past and what has already occurred. He then suggests using the method of 'feedforward'. This is when a person suggests how to improve in the future and suggests help. I have never heard of feedforward until I read this article and its clear already t

Game idea research

Hello everyone!  I have finally decided on a game idea that I want to recreate! It wasn't particularly difficult for me to chose but I knew it would have to be a choice between two games! I wanted to choose between either flappy bird or Nintendogs! I chose... Nintendogs!!! I named my game "Puppy Paws". I chose Nintendogs because I was always interested in the game itself and I thought that it could be a potential challenge to recreate the game. I know, why do I want a challenge when I am already drowning in work that I have barely any time to do? I don't have the answer to that question just yet but let's hope the challenge is worth it! Nintendogs has a lot of elements to it that is impossible for me to create this semester. I plan to take out a lot of difficulty to the game and only focus on the basics but with a twist!   To start, the dog owner (the player)will own a puppy. They must name it and train it! Basic training will have already been complete (learning

Feedback Thoughts

Hello again! Today I will be talking about my thoughts on feedback and my thoughts on two articles I have read about feedback. I, personally like the idea of feedback, yes it may be scary sometimes but most of the time there is the feedback it would be constructive criticism. Constructive criticism helps improve ones work and potentially change the way one does their work again. There is a lot to learn from getting feedback and I feel if one gets feedback regularly they can know what level they are on and tweak their work before its too late and have to change it all or get a lower grade. When I look back on my many years of learning I can specifically remember a time where feedback was very positive to me. When I was in transition year we had to do a musical, I am an extremely shy person and had to so singing auditions. I was so nervous the first time I had to do the music audition. My first audition went extremely well and I was given great feedback. I wasn't as nervous on my n

Game Brainstorm

Hello and welcome back!! Today I will be brainstorming four game ideas from original games but potentially putting my own twist on them. I have chose four games all which I am familiar with. The games include: Flappy Bird, Mario Kart, Nintendogs and Dr Driving. Flappy Bird Flappy Bird is a mobile or PC game. It is a 2D game where the player controls the yellow bird by tapping on the screen or pressing the space bar. The aim of the game is to beat your high score by flying the bird through the gaps of the green pipes. If the player crashes into the green pipes it is GAME OVER. The original flappy bird game was launched in 2014 and had 50 million downloads by January 2014. The game was taken off all App Stores in May 2014, the original creator made the decision to delete his game as there were too much addiction and frustration playing the game. Flappy bird was trending for some time and a lot of trending stories were people smashing and breaking their phones over this game. Today there

Unity Tutorial 1

Hello! I have finally complete unity tutorial 1!! At first, I thought it would be nearly impossible for me to do and that it would take me forever. After completing all the tutorials I am so proud of myself for enjoying every tutorial and doing everything right. There were a few difficult parts but I played back the video tutorials and I flew through them!  I enjoyed the way everything was built up to a finishing product. Firstly I got to pick my vehicle and obstacle and I decided how far apart the obstacles where. It added some sort of personal touch to the game to say that I have done it. After picking the vehicle and obstacle, I learned: how to move the vehicle, change the speed of the vehicle, how to make the vehicle and obstacles collide, and eventually how to get the camera view to move with the vehicle. The whole experience was incredible. Today I am feeling very accomplished because I never in a million years would have thought I'd be able to make/ half make a game. I can&

Tech Tip: Blogger design templates

Hello!!  I decided to chose a new blog design, the design is quite simple so my readers can focus more on my words rather than the site surrounding my words. I used the design template "notable" and customised the colour to blue (my favourite colour). I was unable to change the background image but I prefer my blog sweet and simple. I would highly recommend to anyone reading who has their own blogs, to redesign your blog to suit you and make it more personal so your readers can learn a little bit more about you. Thanks for reading another tech tip!! Student online, going offline <3

Game Design

Hello!! I want to begin by saying wow... I have done it. I read an academic styled paper. I can just about spell the word academic... I have to be brutally honest, I found it extremely difficult to read the paper and it took me forever because I kept needing breaks, but I survived. For some reason, my brain can not take in any information when I am reading long pieces of writing so it takes me longer than the average person to read. It wasn't extremely bad because I got there in the end. Academic writing starts now... What is a game anyway?  Ian Schreiber There are many definitions of what a game is. By reading Ian Schreiber's paper 'what is a game anyway?' it is clear that there are many definitions of what a game is. In Schreiber's paper he talks about distinctions between different games, the importance of vocabulary and game definitions. To begin, Schreiber explains the contrast between game names. Many games are very similar, yet have entirely different names.

My thoughts on time management

Hello!!  I'm going to be talking about my thoughts on time management for this semester in this blog! I want to begin by saying that I feel that it is extremely important for me to have a schedule and manage my time correctly for this module, well all modules. This semester I am going be prioritising my time doing full-time college online and physically working 33 hours in a family run business a week. I don't have a choice to prioritise one over the other at the moment with the pandemic going on. I'm sure you all understand why it is important to me this year to have a schedule... I have planned my schedule for this module already and I intend on putting time aside on a Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They are the only days I am free so I have to technically fit all my modules workload into them days... I will manage it. I think that I will take full advantage of the extra credit assignments in this module as I feel it will take the stress off me trying to get every

Tech Tip: Twitter Widget

Hello!! I added a twitter widget to my blog sidebar!                                                                                                    If you click on the widget it will bring you straight to my college twitter where I post all about multimedia development and new blogs!! I will have more tech tips soon!! Student online, going offline <3

My thoughts on technology tools and course websites I will be using

Hello again!! In today's blog post I will be writing about technology tools and course websites I will be using throughout this semester. This semester we will be using technology tools such as Blogger, Diigo (bookmarking tool), Pinterest, image editing and graphics creators such as Canvas, Cheezburger and Automotivator. I will also be using Padlet, Unity 3D and WordPress. I haven't heard of all these tools but I am sure I will find out soon. I have only used blogger (obviously) and Pinterest which I love. it is so handy and you can find anything you are looking for on it!! I use Pinterest to look for images for my blog! Our class will be directed by using our class website. the website includes all our weekly tasks and demonstrations which I find extremely helpful. We can also access each other's blogs through links on the website, this will save a lot of time trying to find everyone's blogs and give us all easy access! The class website is the most helpful thing this

My thoughts on upcoming assignments

Hello!! In today's blog post, I will be writing my opinion on my upcoming assignments and extra credit assignments. To begin I want to say that this module is going to keep me on my toes. I tend to find myself leaving big assignments until the last minute because there are so many things going on in lectures and labs of other modules. I find that this module suits better to me because there are weekly tasks that have to be submitted most days. This kind of system works better because I can find the time to put the effort into my weekly tasks and they are also fun and interesting. The only thing that I am not looking forward to is the reading and writing academic style... I'm just not built for that level of English... but I will try my hardest. I am very excited to get into the world of gaming this year even though I'm not a massive fan. I think it would be very cool to learn the backgrounds, in and outs of the gaming world. I am yet to do any Unity tutorials but I'm su

Growth mindset

Hello!!  In today's blog, I will be talking all about  growth mindset . I have heard of the words growth and mindset but never together. I learned all about growth mindset by listening to videos of  Carol Dweck  talking and preaching all about growth mindset. The videos were very inspiring as she talked about how to teach the younger generation what my generation was never thought! It's okay to make mistakes because that's how you begin to learn. Getting an F on a test shouldn't mean failure. It should just mean that there is room to improve.  The smartest people in the world we not born smart. They learned through life and put time and effort into their studies. A growth mindset can apply to anything! For example, when I first started cooking my dishes weren't entirely nice. I took constructive criticism and critiqued my dishes to improve. Still, now I am learning. People have to try over and over again to get things right.  I would love to learn more about growth

Introduction to an everything kind of person!

Hello!  In this blog post, I will be sharing a bit about myself, my hobbies and what I got up to during lockdown! To begin let's talk about boring things...  I am 19 years old, nearly 20. I am currently in year 2 of TU Dublin and study Creative Digital Media. I am a super busy person and anytime I get any free time I can never sit still! I have 3 lovely sisters, we are all 2 years apart so that's FUN!! I live in Kildare (in the middle of nowhere) and thankfully don't have to travel by bus anymore to get into college because we are online!! Well, that is sad but it saves me a lot of time and money.  How has my life changed since last year? Well, I have changed a LOT since last year. I have taken up new hobbies, I have made a lot of plans for the coming year, I learned how to drive, I matured and grew as a person but best of all I managed to lose 2 stone!! My new hobbies include cooking, walking and just overall fitness.  As you can probably tell, I am an everything person. I
