Hello!!
I want to begin by saying wow... I have done it. I read an academic styled paper. I can just about spell the word academic... I have to be brutally honest, I found it extremely difficult to read the paper and it took me forever because I kept needing breaks, but I survived. For some reason, my brain can not take in any information when I am reading long pieces of writing so it takes me longer than the average person to read. It wasn't extremely bad because I got there in the end. Academic writing starts now...
What is a game anyway? Ian Schreiber
There are many definitions of what a game is. By reading Ian Schreiber's paper 'what is a game anyway?' it is clear that there are many definitions of what a game is. In Schreiber's paper he talks about distinctions between different games, the importance of vocabulary and game definitions.
To begin, Schreiber explains the contrast between game names. Many games are very similar, yet have entirely different names. Schreiber uses an example of the game 'Three to fifteen' and its relationship to 'Tic-Tac-Toe' or 'Noughts and crosses". All three games have major similarities but there may be some differences in the rules and titles. This depends on the area in which one lives.
Schreiber moves on to speak about the importance of critical vocabulary. He maintains that the critical element of game design is extremely important in determining a good outcome of a successful game. By analysing a game on a stage of completion, the use of critical vocabulary ensures both positive and negative feedback for the designer. The designer can then adjust their work to build the game to the best standard possible.
Schreiber lists many definitions of what a game is, yet only one stood out. "Systems in which players engage in an artificial conflict, defined by rules, that results in a quantifiable outcome".
The Organic Nature of Game Ideation. Annakaisa Kultima
Game ideas are starting points to game design, ideas can be developed over time to create a better outcome of a game design. Training and practice are good elements behind game design also, yet are also very time consuming.
